Today is International Women’s Day. My dad worked in the far east of Russia for many years and this was a BIG holiday, we began celebrating more than our stateside neighbors. The Russians found it silly we limited our celebration of women to just mothers on Mother’s Day, because not all women are able or choose to have children. Instead, International Women’s Day was an annual day of appreciation for all women do. And an excuse to be with the people you love. And drink vodka.
The roots of International Women’s Day are in the labor movement, but it has evolved to represent a celebration and call to action for the rights of women and girls and the creation of a world absent of misogyny. At Bon Lemon, we recently had a very animated discussion about how white men are vilified in our current society. Some agreed with this and some did not, and we had a great chat about how to remain committed to what you are trying to create in the world without making someone else wrong. I believe, to change the world we need to focus on the impact we intend on making, not what we may perceive as getting in the way.
We have arrived at a time in our society where women have more opportunities, but they are now expected to be, not just, mother and homemaker, but also chairman of the board, a sex goddess in the bedroom, and throw in well traveled and a skilled entertainer. I believe this has contributed to our perfectionist culture where nothing is ever good enough. (Maybe I will take this topic on in length another time, but today is a day of celebration and I digress.)
Let’s celebrate all that women and girls bring to the world. Not in comparison to men or in contrast to the lack of something. Let’s just look at us and smile. Let’s be kind to ourselves and other women today. Let’s be encouraging of someone we may be jealous of. Let’s look at our body and think of how miraculous its creation is. Let’s celebrate all we have done and all we dream to do. Women and girls kick ass.
Today, at Bon Lemon every woman and girl will get 25% off their entire purchase.
