2. Getting Strange . . .
If you're not feeling super creative and are stumped on creating your own costume, never fear - Bon Lemon is here to help! Inspired by one of our favorite Netflix shows and fashioned by super cute blogger, Keiko Lynn, Stranger Things' Eleven makes a wonderful last-minute costume.
There is no shame at all in staying in on Halloween. Sometimes you just aren't feeling the get-dressed-up-and-party vibe and we definitely find ourselves there some years. But fear not, we have a great plan B that will make your Halloween just as (if not more) festive, sans all the crazy people.
First, start with a movie. There are hundreds of scary movies that are worth watching, but we found this list on Rotten Tomatoes that shares the top 50 Netflix spooky flicks. Just looking at this list gets us feeling like we will be sleeping with the lights on for weeks . . .
Obviously sugar is a must on Halloween, and below is a delicious dessert recipe to create and indulge in while watching your scary movie. Sharing is definitely optional.
Halloween Whoopie Pies
What you'll need . . .
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, (spooned and leveled)
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (spooned and leveled)
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1 cup packed light-brown sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup confectioners' sugar
- Orange nonpareils or sanding sugar, for decoration
Next . . .
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a medium bowl, whisk flour, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat 1/2 cup butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg; beat until smooth. With mixer on low, alternately add flour mixture and applesauce, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Mix just until smooth (do not over mix).
Drop dough by heaping tablespoons, 2 inches apart, onto two baking sheets. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center of a cookie comes out clean, 10 to 14 minutes. With a thin metal spatula, immediately transfer cookies to a wire rack; let cool completely.
Meanwhile, make filling: In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat vanilla and remaining 1/2 cup butter until light and fluffy. Gradually add confectioners sugar, beating until smooth.
Spread bottom of half the cookies with 1 tablespoon filling each; sandwich with remaining cookies, pressing gently so filling oozes out slightly. Sprinkle exposed filling with nonpareils. Let rest 15 minutes to set.
And what would Halloween be without a delicious drink to go along with it?
Grab a bottle of your favorite whiskey and head over to Bon Lemon to pick up a fancy Corkcicle Whiskey Wedge to sip it in. With this artistic and innovative glass, your whiskey will not get watered down. So go ahead, pour yourself a drink or two and sip as slowly (or as quickly) as you would like!
